Commercial TPO Roofing

Affordable, and durable enough for Colorado’s climate, TPO is an excellent choice for almost any commercial roof

Thermoplastic Polyolefin (TPO) is a recent invention, having been introduced to American rooftops in the early 90s.

That makes TPO a newcomer to the roofing world, especially in comparison to built-up or metal roofs, which have been around for well over a century.

Still, older doesn’t necessarily mean better—it may have been invented just 30 years ago, but today, TPO is one of the fastest-growing commercial roofing systems on the market.

TPO can last 10-20 years, is energy-efficient and adaptable to a variety of (low-slope and flat commercial roofs). If you’re looking for a low-cost roof that can do it all, TPO is one innovation you won’t want to miss out on…

Construction & Features

Thermoplastic Polyolefin (along with EPDM, PVC, and other, similar materials) are known as single-ply membranes.

“Single-ply” generally refers to sheets of rubber and/or synthetics that are rolled out and fastened or adhered directly onto the roof insulation. And while a number of other roofing types fall under this category, TPO offers a few standout features.

TPO is made up of layers of durable synthetic material laid over a reinforcing fabric scrim. TPO’s surface is bright white, which helps repel UV rays and improves efficiency.

During the installation process, TPO sheets are laid out and may be heat welded together. Heat welding provides unmatched durability and seam strength (this is key because those seams are often the weakest point on a single-ply roof).

Before we continue, there are a few things you’ll need to consider regarding single-ply roof systems.

Roof Insulation

Though TPO sheets come in a variety of thicknesses, no TPO roof will effectively insulate your roof on its own. So, we almost always install roof insulation first. Note that based on your building’s location, a minimum R-value may be required (in the Denver-Metro area, a minimum rating of R-30 is typically required).

Roof Type & Condition

TPO is versatile, but it’s not perfect for every commercial roof. The size of your roof, the complexity of your roof, and the condition of your roof can all affect the performance of TPO.

The condition of your roof is critical, as the roof surface needs to be clean, level, and integrally sound before a TPO roof can be installed.

If all this seems a bit confusing, don’t worry! Our experts can help you choose the right options for your roof.
